Federal Police target family of centrist congressman on suspicion of embezzlement of amendments

The Federal Police, the CGU (Office of the Comptroller General of the Union), and the Federal Revenue Service launched the fifth phase of Operation Overclean this Thursday (17), investigating the embezzlement of amendments, which targeted the family of Congressman Elmar Nascimento (União Brasil-BA).

The objective was to dismantle a criminal organization suspected of involvement in bidding fraud, embezzlement of public funds from parliamentary amendments, corruption, and money laundering.

Ten search warrants were executed in Bahia cities such as Salvador, Campo Formoso, Senhor do Bonfim, Petrolina, Mata de São João, and Brasília, in addition to an order for the precautionary removal of a public servant from his duties.

All orders were authorized by Justice Kassio Nunes Marques of the STF (Supreme Federal Court). The operation focused on contracts signed in 2022 by the federal state-owned company Codevasf, through parliamentary amendments, with the municipality of Campo Formoso, the congressman’s hometown.

The targets of the operation were Elmar’s brother, Elmo Nascimento, the mayor of Campo Formoso, his cousin, Councilman Francisco Nascimento, and the former president of Codevasf, Marcelo Moreira, who was appointed by the congressman to the position. The congressman himself was not targeted.
