City Hall declares Jockey Club of public utility and begins expropriation process

The Goiânia City Hall has ordered the expropriation of the former Jockey Club, designed by renowned architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The property, abandoned for years and with a tax debt of R$168 million, occupies 21,000 m² on Anhanguera Avenue.

Municipal decree No. 2.807/2025, signed by Mayor Sandro Mabel, transforms the space into a public asset. The administration plans to convert it into a multifunctional complex, potentially housing everything from cultural venues to state administrative offices.

Designed by one of the greatest exponents of Brazilian modern architecture, the building maintains its historical and structural value. The city government guarantees that the renovations will preserve its original features, despite the lack of a listed building.

Proposals for the site include everything from the previous administration’s gastronomic project to innovative ideas such as gaming spaces and digital culture. The state government is negotiating adjacent areas to expand the administrative complex.

This initiative is part of the Centraliza program, which seeks to redevelop the city center. The city government argues that the renovation of the Jockey Club represents savings compared to the construction of new public facilities.
